Immigration and Customs Enforcement (“ICE”) reported that it picked up 680 undocumented immigrants during the week of February 5, 2017. Is this something new under Trump? The short answer is maybe. ICE has conducted these types of raids in the past and it appears that they were planned for weeks. ICE’s priorities for deportation (criminals, recent arrivals, and those with final removal orders) has not changed. ICE employees have been given no specific new guidance on enforcement or policy changes. This may be nothing more than some local ICE offices feeling that they had some freedom to act under the new administration. It’s still “wait and see” as to how the Trump administration will carry out immigration enforcement. A good, long summary of the recent raids is available here from Vox: The first immigration raids of the Trump era, explained.
